ADEX and COEXPORT sign agreement to strengthen trade relations between El Salvador and Peru

The Salvadoran Exporters Corporation (COEXPORT) and the Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX) signed an agreement within the framework of the El Salvador-Peru Port Logistics Forum, with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation and fostering trade growth between the two countries.

This agreement will allow for the implementation of an Annual Work Plan focused on strategic areas such as the exchange of trade information, the promotion of events, technical cooperation, and institutional strengthening to boost the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In a context of growing interest in strengthening trade relations, El Salvador and Peru have recently resumed talks for the signing of a Free Trade Agreement.

This pact would expand opportunities for companies in both countries, facilitating market diversification and the growth of bilateral trade. This agreement is particularly timely, given the announcement of the start of the process for signing a Free Trade Agreement with Peru, a negotiation that has been postponed for several years and is now expected to be finalized. Currently, consultations are underway with the business sector to understand the positions of different sectors regarding this treaty.

During 2024, El Salvador imported products from Peru valued at US$85.3 million, primarily polyacetals, other polyesters and epoxy resins, non-cellular and unreinforced plastic plates, sheets, plates, and strips, fresh or dried grapes (including raisins), bakery, pastry, and cookie products (including those with added cocoa), and copper wire. Meanwhile, El Salvador's exports to Peru reached US$29.1 million, with key products such as sugar, petroleum or bituminous mineral oils, tableware, kitchenware, plastic household and hygiene products, t-shirts and knit shirts, as well as paper and cardboard for recycling.

Through this agreement, ADEX and COEXPORT will share relevant information on market access regulations, trade trends, and best practices for industrial development. Furthermore, they are committed to organizing events and trade fairs to generate new business opportunities and strengthen the competitiveness of exporters. "The strategy we are working on and supporting focuses on how to expand the presence of our exporters in new markets," said Silvia Cuéllar, President of COEXPORT. With this alliance, both institutions reaffirm their commitment to the growth of international trade and the advancement of Salvadoran and Peruvian exporters.
