COEXPORT History

The history of COEXPORT is intrinsically linked to the modern economic development of El Salvador. It emerged at a time when the country needed to diversify its economy, which depended almost exclusively on a few agricultural products.

1. Foundation and Origin (1972)

COEXPORT was founded in 1972 as an initiative of visionary businesspeople who understood that the import substitution model was reaching its limits. At that time, Salvadoran exports were focused on the "traditional agro-export model" (coffee, cotton, and sugar). The corporation was founded to pave the way for "non-traditional products."

2. The Era of Crisis (1980s)

During the civil conflict in El Salvador, COEXPORT played a heroic role for the private sector. While the country's infrastructure suffered damage and foreign investment withdrew, the trade association became a logistical and technical support network, ensuring that companies could continue exporting their products and thus maintaining the flow of foreign currency that sustained the national economy.

3. Trade Liberalization (1990s)

With the signing of the Peace Accords in 1992, COEXPORT led the transition to a free market economy. They were key players in:

The negotiation of the first Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

The modernization of customs and the creation of export promotion laws.

The development of Free Trade Zones, which facilitated the arrival of the textile industry on a large scale.

4. 21st Century: Diversification and Added Value

Since 2000, COEXPORT's history has focused on moving beyond exporting only "raw materials" to exporting "added value."

2004: Active participation in the implementation of CAFTA-DR, opening the US market preferentially.

2010 onwards: Creation of programs for the export of services (IT, Software, Creative) and support for the processed food sector with high-quality standards.

Present: Leading the digitalization of the sector, promoting cross-border e-commerce and sustainability as a requirement for entering Europe.

5. Historical Recognitions

COEXPORT established the "Exporter Award," the most prestigious award in the sector, which for decades has annually recognized companies that successfully conquer international markets, becoming a historical record of Salvadoran business success.
